We are thrilled in welcoming our new Senior Head Coach Van Humphries, his partner Brigid and son Alfie to the Gators community for the 2018 season.

This is the last piece of the puzzle with the board restructuring our rugby operations for 2018.  The Alleygators board were aware that changes were required and this restructure will allow us to have a sustainable model for the long term future of our rugby.

This new structure will see the disbandment of the senior rugby committee.  A new position called the Club Rugby Co-ordinator will report to the board on all things rugby.  For me personally I have decided not to re-nominate for the role of President for 2018 and will nominate for the new position of Club Rugby Co-ordinator.

Due to the increasing interest in Ladies rugby, Mike Elliston will concentrate solely on being the Women’s Rugby Manager.  There are huge opportunities for the ladies game and Mike is the perfect candidate at our club to continue the growth pre and post Commonwealth Games.  His coaching skills have seen a number of our players represent at national & state level with a number of the girls also representing in the recent national AON series.

Ryan Roberts will continue to provide his excellent coaching skills in the new role of Rugby Pathways Director.  There will be a concerted effort to keep our young men and women in the game of rugby at Alleygators and Ryan’s role will be pivotal to providing pathways for these players.  Ryan will coach our Under 15’s upwards next season and this will become a set standard for all future junior teams in these age groups.  He will also coach the coaches from Under 6’s upwards and continue his work with the Southern Cross Rugby Academy.

The Juniors have seen strong player growth this season.  Kristy Smith is the new President of the Juniors taking over from Matt Kennedy and I am sure Kristy will continue the great work Matt has provided over a number of years.

Our club sponsors play a key role funding rugby at the Alleygators and the 2018 sponsorship funds have allowed us to put this rugby model forward that will be the envy of any Gold Coast rugby club.  Our new website is now complete and this will showcase our sponsors along with many other new initiatives. This will go live shortly.

To all the community who utilise our club facilities we have engaged an experienced club management team to assist us improve our club for long term profitability and sustainability.

We are confident the new initiatives we have put in place will see us grow into a thriving rugby and community club.

Former Wallaby and QLD Reds Player Van Humphries is set to be the Palm Beach Currumbin Senior A Grade Rugby Coach for 2018. News of the appointment came late Friday afternoon after coaching contracts were signed at PBC Alleygators Club House located at Bienvenue Drive in Currumbin Waters.

“It’s really exciting to be coming on board and I’m looking forward to getting started” said Humphries of his move to the Gold Coast club. It is the final piece in the Alleygators puzzle and completes a significant restructure within the club’s organisational model.

Club officials have been looking closely at ways to improve the areas that need attention. The 2017 A Grade Coach Ryan Roberts will step up to a newly created Rugby Pathways Director role and will oversee the player transition from junior to senior rugby.

“We have the strongest junior club on the Gold Coast” said club Vice President Nick Pearce. “However it is really difficult to keep these juniors all the way through to Colts level. By offering these potential Colts access to the coaching calibre of Van Humphries and Ryan Roberts we’re giving them a real reason to stay”. Pearce also outlined that bridging the gap from junior players through to Colts was a priority for the club and that a dedicated pathways position would do that.

The new Rugby Pathways Director will be responsible for ensuring the junior players skill sets are at a level each year where growth and improvement can be easily identified. Roberts is also Coaching Director within the Southern Cross Rugby Academy, an initiative of the Alleygators.

“It’s been a very busy year” said Roberts when asked for comment. “The Academy is providing rugby players with more opportunities to improve their game. Initiatives such as School Holiday Clinics and most recently, the 6 week Off Season Training Programs concentrate on strength and conditioning as well as intensified on field training”.

With the club re-structure Mike Elliston will move into the role of Women’s Rugby Manager, where he will continue his work in developing and promoting women’s rugby on the Coast.

The club’s current President, Mark Doherty, will take on the position of Club Rugby Co-ordinator, a role that overseas all rugby matters and reports directly to the Club Board.

“Having Van come on board cements our whole club structure” said Doherty. “Having a Senior A Grade Rugby Coach who has played three stints at the Queensland Reds , played for clubs in Italy and Japan, as well as played for New South Wales Waratahs for many seasons and represented Australia A is a huge benefit to the club.”

The recent sausage sizzle was a massive success thanks to the dedication and commitment of the U14 boys and parents who supported the fundraiser. In total over $4,000 was raised for the U14's trip to New Zealand in 2018.

A big thanks to Top Cut Meats on Villiers Drive for donating the sausages and to Bunnings for supporting our club by giving us the opportunity to raise some much needed funds.

If you know any women looking to play rugby sevens share this newsletter with them. We welcome new players here at Gators.

The Club Christmas Extravaganza is going to be a great FREE family fun day. Kicking off at 1pm there will be kids rides, food vans, face painting, a visit from Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, live music, a visit from Santa by helicopter, roving characters, a sausage sizzle, tug of war and fireworks. We will also have a mega raffle with amazing prizes - tickets on sale with one for $5 and 3 for $10. Come on down and join in the fun. Thanks to all our sponsors for making this event possible.

Last year the Christmas Extravaganza was a great success and the biggest fundraiser of the year for the club.

This year we are looking for volunteers to help with set up on Friday Dec 1st, with set up and general duties on Sat Dec 2nd and with rubbish collection and taking down tents after the event.

Please offer your services if you are free - every little bit counts. We are looking for both young and old and everyone in between.

Contact Mark Doherty or email the club on to register your interest.

There was no lucky winner at the last Members raffle so the cash prize rolls over to next Thursday, November 16th. It now stands at $2,200.

It could be you but you've got to be at the club to win the prize if your name is called out.

If you are not a member it only costs $6 to join. You get discounts off food, drinks, merchandise and are entered into weekly members draws.

The Christmas Extravaganza is presented by Coast Creek Country Realty and we'd like to give them a shout out for their continuous support of our club. Without local businesses such as Coast Creek Country Realty getting involved in the club we would not have the same community spirit at Gators.
