Alleygators v Nerang 9/8/08
The Alleygators returned to the winners circle and kept their minor premiership hopes alive with a 39-24 win over Nerang Bulls at Pappas Way on Saturday.
Reeling after last weeks heavy loss to reigning premiers Surfers Dolphins, the ‘Gators welcomed back key personnel and put the Bulls away in the second half where they scored four of their five tries.
The best piece of rugby came midway through the second stanza when halfback Adam McCormack drilled a kick deep into Bulls territory before the ‘Gators stole the lineout and went through six sets of hands for Kane Lock to score in the far corner.
Classy as ever Lock went on to score a treble in the match, his second for the season.
While both teams went try for try throughout the match, winger Stephan Vidacek proved to be the difference with the boot, nailing five from five including two first half penalty goals.
“It was ugly but effective” said coach Bill Te Oka who also admitted that there was a lot of work still to be done on backline combinations in the weeks to come.
While coach Te Oka said his team was definitely not thinking finals football yet, he did conclude “it was good to knock off Nerang at home again”.
These two competition heavyweights have met three times this season for two Palm Beach wins and a draw which should stand the Alleygators in good stead at the business end of the year.
Enigmatic prop Junior Poaching and skipper Doug Rehu led the way for the Alleygators, fittingly both were rewarded with touchdowns in the five tries to four win.
The Alleygators travel to Bond next week for a Friday night game with the Pirates where winger Lock will look to keep his try scoring tally ticking over, having crossed five times in their last two clashes.
Alleygator v Nerang 12/7/08
The Alleygators played out a 10 all draw in an uninspiring and at times spiteful match with the Nerang Bulls at home on the weekend.
Alleygators v Bond Pirates
28/6/08
The Alleygators sounded warning to all their rivals and raged back to the top of the Gold Coast Premier Rugby ladder with a 68-0 schooling of the Bond Pirates at home on Saturday.
Alleygators forwards ruled the ruck, Tom Williams’ service from half was first class and the backs ran riot in a textbook ten try performance which left coaches and fans smiling.
“We knew they were capable of that, they followed the game plan and now they know what can happen” coach Kurtis Smith said after the match.
PBC began the game in top gear with Robb Webb and Kane Locke scoring early to put the sluggish Pirates on the back foot, Webb finished the match with a double, Locke a hat trick.
More attractive rugby saw the Gators rack up a 33-0 half time lead; and then came the death roll, Williams getting a licence to run in the second half, having a hand in four tries as he carved up the Pirates defensive line.
Locke and John Kolokihakaufisi were unstoppable out wide scoring off set plays and kicks while their fly-half and chief playmaker Adam McCormack sat on the bench injured.
The boys showed no mercy racking up five second half tries, Damien Webb showed great form with the boot, kicking seven from eight and scoring a try to tally 19 points of his own.
while the Alleygators bared their teeth in round 7, rivals Surfers Paradise stumbled to a 19-10 win at home against the Knights and surrendered top spot on the ladder.
Alleygators v Nerang
21/6/08
Alleygators handed Nerang a rare loss at home and got their Gold Coast Premier Rugby season back on track with a 21 -10 win in a dour affair at Pappas Way on Saturday.
Playing on a heavy track the Alleygators commitment was evident in the early minutes as they got over the top of the Bulls and won the early battle for field position. Scoring opened with a stunning play that saw Junior Poaching cross out wide, the enigmatic prop catching the ball at outside centre and charging 30m to touch down.Winger Kane Lock scored his fourth try in his last four matches and the Alleygators went to the break leading 14-5.
The second half played out much the same as the first, the Gators forwards closed shop around the ruck forcing the Bulls to play laterally which did not suit the conditions. The Gators added only one try in the second half, Adam McCormack sneaking over from close to put the Bulls away.
Coaches Kurtis Smith and Bill Te Oka were glad to be back in the winners circle, “we are a fair way from where we were a couple of weeks ago, but any win at Nerang is a good win”, “the effort was there today” said Smith.
Locks Luke Bellinger and Dillon Cooper were outstanding for PBC after the coaches demanded that the tight five perform, stand in Captain Doug Rehu was relentless and flanker Robb Webb delivered his usual first class display.
The Alleygators retain second spot on the competition ladder and look forward to returning home for family day next Saturday where all Alleygators from under sevens to firsts (excluding third grade) will play. The first fifteen will take on Bond who picked up their first win of the season last week.
Alleygators v Surfers
14/6/08
The win only start to the season by the Alleygators first fifteen finally came to a crashing halt on Saturday, beaten soundly 47-15 by defending premiers Surfers Dolphins. The game was a remarkable reversal from the 32-7 caning dealt out by the Gators in round 1. Both sides came out fired up and traded tries early and almost traded blows as Surfers did everything possible to try and get over the top of the punishing Alleygators forwards. The game was shaping up as a true heavyweight battle and then the Gators started to drop the ball, surrendering two quick tries and from there on fought an up hill battle. The Dolphins kicked a penalty goal at the siren to go to the sheds leading 23-5.
The boys came out with renewed purpose in the second half, again dominating at the scrum which was likely the most pleasing aspect for the coaches. But when Surfers scored first, a length of the field try against the run of play, the boys were again left wondering where their luck was. Down 28-5 the Gators kept fighting but it seemed that every time we got one on them they would get it straight back, extinguishing any chance of a comeback. Surfers executed their game plan well which was obviously to shift the ball wide and have their bigger more seasoned wingers run at our young blokes. The Gators simply dropped too much ball to build any pressure. Co-coach Bill Teoka offered no excuses for the squad “Surfers played better rugby than us, its as simple as that”. Positives from the game were the Gators scrum, Robb Webb was outstanding through the ruck in attack and defence and the addition of Pom Luke Bellinger, who seems certain to add something to the lineout.
Surfers have joined the Alleygators on four wins from five matches but sit on top of the table with one extra bonus point. The Alleygators will look to put the loss behind them when they travel to Nerang next week still keen to make amends for last years knockout loss against the Bulls in the semi finals.
Alleygators Vs Hogs Round 5
Matt Blomberg
The Alleygators remained undefeated thanks to outstanding try line defence and a superb performance from fly half Adam Mccormack in a Gold Coast Premier Rugby top of the table clash versus the Helensvale Hogs at Currumbin on the weekend. Alleygators were 19-5 winners in a game of two very different halves; both of which were super impressive from the home team.
Any feedback and criticism is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
