RUGBY REPORT 16TH APRIL

The Alleygators travelled up to Heeb St in Benowa to take on the Knights in a match with both teams coming off disappointing losses. Notoriously slow starters the Alleygators found themselves foul with the referee and with basic errors eliminating any good work around the pitch, the Knights took an early 3-0 lead. The Knights scored a converted try through a spilt ball and a few soccer kicks, which reflected the Gators luck. 10-0 became 13-0 when further ill disclipline by the Gators allowed another kick able penalty to the Knights before an injury break gave us some time to re-evaluate the game plan. We put to work our attack and actually played some good footy, stretching the Knights whom I'm sure would've liked a few more points on the board going into half time. Turning around in the 2nd half both teams were guilty of too many errors, while the Knights stepped up the physicality, our boys kept getting up and playing some rugby. Unfortunately a further error at a scrum saw the Knights, play a phase or two before coming back and scoring a converted try next to the posts. 20-0 and the Allygators started finding some confidence with the ball, Emasi Tuivanuavou going over after 5-6 phases on attack, and then again 10min later after the Knights were lucky not to have a 2nd player yellow carded for professional fouls. 20-12 was the final score, and even upto the final play, the boys were eager to score another try. Some outstanding efforts by a few of the players- Matt Monahan, Ricky Agent, Dan Walker, Mikey Maatouk, Karl Manning all putting thier bodies on the line. Young JamesMoi came on as a substatute prop and exceeded expectations. To be honest this game wasn't that far out of our reach even at 20-0, but for another high penalty count against us and too many basic errors which saw two gifted tries to the Knights, our inexperience and lack of combinations caught us short at the final whistle. With another away game vs Gold Coast Eagles this week before a well earned bye the following week, we are looking forward to the stretch of 6 home games in a row coming up. Cheers Robbo
