RUGBY REPORTS: SAT 2ND JULY

LAST WEEKS RESULTS      Seniors V Eagles

What a great weekend of some really good quality Rugby. 3rd grade kicked it off against top of the table Eagles. Another victory for the good guys. A really good old arm wrestle with the eventual winners taking the points late in the 2nd half. Just makes you wonder how good a season it could have been for 3rds if they hadn't had to forfeit those 3 games at the beginning of the season and giving up those 6 points. They sit currently 7 points from 4th which is totally in sight with a strong finish to the year.
2nd's were hot to trot too to a strong physical Eagles side. Some great performances with a number of these guys backing up from 3rds and others backing up for 1st's. The hardest working team on the Gold Coast I reckon. How good is Chongy out in the backs?? From front row, to racing down the wing and grabbing some meat pies. 2 in 2 weeks, and just missing by a finger tip a 2nd one late in the game for an exciting finish. If only the pass was that little bit higher. A game of inches huh. Leaves 2nds just 8 points outside the top 4. Sitting 5th right now.
1st grade. What a week we had. 1st's starting off with no one on the bench due to injuries and other commitments. The mighty 2nds, after a slight breather then got themselves set and the bench was formed.  A huge effort all round, with 17 yr old Anthony Maatouk making his run on debut at inside centre and Jesse Pratt making his 1st grade debut off the bench. A tight 1st half saw the Boys in Green and White head in at half time with a narrow 6 nil lead. Not sure what was said at that break but the boys came out firing and within the minute had dotted down. 11 zip. Some anxious moments when last years premiers dragged it back to 11-5 shortly after. Just the 2 penalties in it again. Then the boys lifted and whipped in a couple of unanswered tries and took the game 23-5 eventually.
The whole day was played for the Shaw Devenport shield which we haven't held for a number of years I believe. Nice to have it back in the rooms. Well done boys.

Seniors this week.

Another wonderful weekend of Alleygators Rugby at Alleygators central. 12.30 see's the 3rds up against Helensvale with a must win game. Helensvale sits a couple of places above us so must make sure we walk away with the points if finals once again are on the cards.
2nd's then take on Bond, in a similar do or die affair. With a 10 point win last round, the signs are strong. Lets hope the boys can dig deep for the whole 80 and come through.
1st grade kick off at 3.30 this weekend against last year Grand Finalists. It was a real tight tussle last match with Our lads coming through in the last minute with Bond dropping the ball over the line for a 7 point win. Nail biting to say the least.
Support certainly helps. Lets get down there and get behind the boys who are out there, putting the pride into the jersey.

Ladygators.

The ladies were back at it again last weekend. Travelled all the way to Toowoomba and took on a couple of University teams. I keep forgetting what a young team we have, with the average age on Saturday being just 18. It's a credit to them they do so well. All 4 games they came away convincing winners. Their tackling and contact work is coming along and their field awareness was outstanding. A number of planned moves  as well as playing what they saw in front of them led to some pretty spectacular tries. Certainly waving the Alleygators flag high girls well done.
Ladies day this weekend will see the Ladygators in action from 12.45. Taking on our Close neighbour Griffith Uni as well as the Saints from Toowoomba. You have seen the Aussie girls are off to Rio, come down and watch the next batch of hopefuls. A number of these girls have already played in Qld squads, taking on interstate teams as well as a full blown international team, being China. They know their way around the football paddock, thats for sure. They will be running from 12.45 - 3.30. If you get a chance, pop on over to field 2 and give them a cheer.
