Rugby 7’s program

The Southern Cross Rugby Academy (SCRA) is calling for expressions of interest for all U16-U18 Boys and U17 Girls to participate in our Rugby 7’s program. The SCRA Sevens program is a new and exciting Rugby Sevens initiative featuring specialised fitness, skill and strategy training for aspiring young Rugby players. Our goal is to provide more opportunities for all players to train and play Sevens and be exposed to State and National representative Pathway. The program commences with 2x testing/trial dates on Sunday 19th and 26th August, and features a 6 week training program through September, with 2x field sessions a week, selected Tournament entry and SCRA Sevens training t-shirt. Our players receive coaching from experienced coaches with opportunity to contest selected domestic tournaments and we are hopeful for future International events.

Girls player profile

This week’s Girls player profile is one of many new comers to the club in 2018 and it’s also her 1st year playing Rugby Sevens- Jemma Bemrose from the U17’s Girls team. Jemma’s played a lot of touch and Oztag before trying her hand at Sevens as her school (Elanora SHS) started training and entered a competition. Her friends decided to start up a team, so they all joined. She remembers her first game as being very nervous and the contact was so new, but once she started it was plenty of fun while other Girls were supportive and giving advice as she was learning to play.

Jemma’s favourite part is the tackling, often chasing across to cut off and chop the attackers in half, and she’s still not sure on the line outs but is learning every training and game day. She is very keen to stay in the game, and has also been playing with our Opens team on Fridays too, and would love to play at higher rep levels in the future also.

Sense Rugby

SENSE RUGBY is launching at the Alleygators!

On behalf of the Alleygators Rugby Union Club, I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce SENSE RUGBY to our Club.  As we are thrilled to have you joining us!

Sense Rugby was founded in October 2015 by Paediatric Occupational Therapist, Carlien Parahi and Australian Rugby Sevens Olympian, Jesse Parahi. Sense Rugby is a rugby based Occupational Therapy program designed to help kids who usually find it difficult to be part of a sports team. There are many reasons why kids may struggle to find success and enjoyment in sport. We are here to help get to the bottom of it and send them on their way to success.

Brining the first Sense Rugby program to Queensland is Kids & Community which is a paediatric occupational therapy practice based at West Burleigh. Charmaine Owen the Director of Kids & Community is a Gold Coast local and after tripping around in younger years settled back on the Gold Coast in 2002. Kids & Community has been operating since 2006 initially as a sole provider and now a vibrant team of 8 energetic occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants and admin support staff. They provide occupational therapy and specialist support services to children and families in the greater Gold Coast and Tweed coast areas. They work with children with a range of difficulties form children with significant disabilities to children with specific issues like sensory motor difficulties or management or anxiety. Charmaine said “It is our strong desire that we run this group in the environment in the community where other kids play and train.”

As the Junior President of the Alleygators Rugby Union Club I am both honoured and looking forward to sharing our facilities with the many children and families to ensure Sense Rugby has a home within our community.  You can see the program in action on a weekly basis in QLD school term on Thursday afternoons from 3.30pm-4.30pm then 4.45pm-5.45pm.

*For further information about this program please contact Director Charmaine Owen at charmaine@kidsandcommunity.com.au
