Southern Cross Rugby Academy

The Southern Cross Rugby Academy (SCRA) is calling for expressions of interest for all U16-U18 Boys and U17 Girls to participate in our Rugby 7’s program. The SCRA Sevens program is a new and exciting Rugby Sevens initiative featuring specialised fitness, skill and strategy training for aspiring young Rugby players.  Our goal is to provide more opportunities for all players to train and play Sevens and be exposed to State and National representative Pathway. The program commences with 2x testing/trial dates on Sunday 19th and 26th August, and features a 6 week training program through September, with 2x field sessions a week, selected Tournament entry and SCRA Sevens training t-shirt. Our players receive coaching from experienced coaches with opportunity to contest selected domestic tournaments and we are hopeful for future International events. To register your interest and book your place contact: ryan.roberts@scra.com.au

Girls Rugby Updates

This week we are heading back to Coomera Crushers Rugby club for the 2nd Saturday competition. These Saturdays are a standalone competition, separate to the Friday nights which are seen as more development type evenings. Having our Girls play on the Saturday, actually gets them used to competition structure, of playing 4-5 games on the day, and having age group Finals. There is a World Series thinking also, with accumulation of points on offer for teams to take home trophies.

This week’s player profile is a Girl that plays in both the Open’s and for the U17’s also, into her 2nd year with the club- Zara Canfield. Zara comes from a Rugby League, Touch footy background, loves to surf and is a student at PBC SHS. Her 1st game she said that she was very nervous, and didn’t really know the rules, but it was heaps of fun and as she loves the contact once she got stuck in she was fine from there on. Zara is a skilful player, loves to be ball playing, has a great kick and chase, and can tackle but doesn’t enjoy the fitness side of Rugby Sevens. Zara has aspirations to make one of the AON Women’s teams and would like to play for Queensland in the future.

Volunteer Of The Week

This week’s Volunteer of the Week goes to Daragh Murphy. Daragh is the long serving Under 15’s manager as well as the Junior Treasurer. Daragh is a great club person and a big supporter of the many things we do here at the Alleygators. Thanks Daragh, the Alleygators couldn’t do it without people like you.

If you’d like to lend a hand to help make our club a bit better, please contact rugby@alleygators.com.au . You don’t have to do as much as Daragh, but as we keep on saying every little bit helps and, ‘many hands make light work’.
