Old Boys Day – July 7th

Hey OLD BOYS! It’s time to meet again and talk about how good we were and reminisce the good old days playing for the ”Beach”. Let’s see who has more grey hair or less as the case may be, lost that stunning playing physique, the dodgy knees or walking with a limp! The last big reunion was a great success so let us see if we can make it even better!

‪Join us on Saturday July 7th‬ when the boys play Coolangatta Tweed BaaBaas which has always been a good local derby. Dress code for the day: wear an old Alleygators polo shirt or playing jersey (If you haven’t got good excuse to buy the latest polo!) There will be a prize for the oldest polo/ jersey that still fits.

Please text Rick the Pom on ‪0417628856‬ or email rgabain@hotmail.com for further info and to say you will be attending. Pass the word around to all your ex playing mates!

Rugby News

Firstly, I would like to welcome Ata who will be coaching the clubs 2nd grade side and the three Americans James, Ryan and Ilan from Cal Poly Tech.

Match Report

2nd Grade

With Ata taking the reins on Saturday and the throw together side. The side took on a much fancied side of Griffith University. From the kick off, the Alleygators showed plenty of enthusiasm in attack and defence with some barn storming runs and big hits in defence from some individuals brilliance. Unfortunately the lack of team cohesion meant the well drilled side of Griffith ended finishing of top running out winner on the day.

1st XV

The Alleygators 1st where out to redeem themselves after the first round lost to the Knight 69-0 and they didn’t disappoint the home crowd. Head Coach Anthony Dwyer giving his side some inspirational word before kick set alight a fire amongst the side. As soon the as referee blow his whistle it was game on with the Alleygator throwing everything at the Knights. Again the Knight took an early lead scoring in the scoring corner and making the conversion making 7-0. A superb restart kick saw the Alleygators retake possession and putting the Knights under pressure securing a plenty making it 7-3. The first half was a see-sawing battle the home side disrupting the Knight free flowing game with some gritty defence and tight ball playing making the half time score 24-12. The second half saw much of the same game style with the Alleygators frustrating the Knight into mistakes all night long seeing them reduced to 13 men at one stage. the Knights stayed strong and stuck to their structure and ran out victors 47-12.

This week we see the Alleygators take on Bond Pirates at Miami. I would also like to take this time to invite anyone that has any desire in helping the club on and off the field to contact the club. Senior Training: Tuesday & Thursday Night 6:30pm at the Club – Rugby Co-ordinator: Vladimir Savovski.

Volunteer of the Week

Our ‘Volunteer of the week’ is Greg Williams (centre). Greg is a loyal, valued, well respected and well liked club member for many years now stretching in to decades. He has held many Management Committee positions over the years including taking on the current role as Treasurer for a second time for the past 5 years.

Greg has coached Junior rugby teams taking many of them to finals appearances. Greg is also a stalwart member of the Toothless Gators Golden Oldies group for many years and up until a few weeks back was running, passing, tackling and scoring tries like a 20 year old until a severe injury to his left ankle has forced him to hang up the boots.

Anyone who knows Greg, knows he is always first on the scene for volunteer working bees around the Club and has been known to host some very cordial after work done social events.

If you’d like to lend a hand to help make our club a bit better, please contact rugby@alleygators.com.au . You don’t have to do as much as Greg, but as we keep on saying every little bit helps and, ‘many hands make light work’.
