Congratulations Lily Dick
A stunning breakaway try from 18-year-old Lily Dick earned the Australian women’s team a bronze medal at the Dubai Sevens as they edged the United States 26-21 in a thrilling third place playoff.
Scores were locked 21-all with time elapsed on the clock when Dick, playing in her first World Series tournament, gathered the ball 40 metres out from the line and powered away from the tiring US defence for the decisive score.
“It’s been an emotional one, but I’m really proud of the girls, the courage they showed,” Australian coach John Manenti said.
“We were down to 10 players at the end there and the girls had to fight pretty hard.” Speaking of his surprise match winner Manenti added: “The two young girls (17-year-old) Sariah Paki and Lily just went from strength to strength and the more I played them the better they got.
“Lily ended up winning the game after playing 14 minutes — so just phenomenal from them.” Full story here
All here at Alleygators Rugby Club are very proud of Lily’s achievements.

2019 Team Coaches, Managers and Match Day Managers
For any amazing volunteer looking to get involved with an age group in 2019, please fill out the Application Form and let us know what role you’d like to take on. We ask that you get the forms back to the Committee ASAP, to help us prepare for the upcoming season. Download form: Click here
Please note in 2019 each age group must nominate a Match Day Manager from their team separate from the usual roles of Coach, Assistant Coach/es and Manager.
The Match Day Manager (MDM) is a small but vital role come game day. With at least one representative from each team, we can all enjoy our home rounds while keeping things running smoothly.
Many hands make light work!
Toothless Gators News
Saturday 24th November saw the Golden Oldies head out on their annual Mystery Bus Tour.
Always a great day out, the Mystery Tour is a Toothless Gators social event not to miss.
The day started with a meet and greet at the club, with the Sheriff going heavy on the fines early. First stop was Mount Nathan Winery, where we were lucky enough to have some wine history and wisdom imparted on us by a master. Probably more importantly, there was plenty of samples to enjoy.
Our next stop…
Next stop was lunch al fresco at Advancetown Hotel. All fed and watered, we then moved on to the afternoons activities with barefoot bowls at Robina. There was a fair amount of trash talking but hydration remained a key tactic, and was a clear advantage to some. It did seem to create amnesia in others though….just saying Sheriff.
The day wrapped up back at Alleygators, to share the Sheriff’s spoils, as is tradition.
Thanks to Currumbin Valley Buses for carting us around and Nathan Smith for organising the day out.
Off Season Junior Sessions
Our off season Junior Development Sessions have continued into our 2nd week and another good turnout for November Rugby. Great work by all the players over the 3 sessions we cover- U10’s to U13’s, U14’s to U16’s and Girls. Great work by all parents to get these little- and not so little, Alleygators players down for end of the year Rugby fun.
Southern Cross Rugby Academy News
The Southern Cross Rugby Academy moves into our last week for the off-season program. We’ve completed some testing for our players and some great results over the 7wks by all. One of the biggest changes is the amount of work they’re getting through in each session, with Monday nights strongman style sessions now completing as much work in one session, as we were completing in two back in week 1.
Great work with all the tools at hand, from battle ropes for warm ups, to sleds both weighted and without weight, which can be used for distance or for shorter work. We’ve also progressed from the smaller tractor tyres, to working with large truck tyres with the bladders and water inside for extra weight. Our main running test has been our 1km time trial, which has seen some players record 5min plus in the 1st week, are now recording in the mid 4min time, and even on Monday we completed 2x trials to really test out the players resilience and will to roll the sleeves up and get stuck in. Great work by all again.
