PBC Rugby Coordinator Announcement

Palm Beach Currumbin Rugby Club have taken the first step towards strengthening the club for the future with the appointment of Michael Bell as Rugby Coordinator for the 2019 season.

Michael joins the Club after an extensive career in Rugby Administration and Coaching. Most recently, Michael was the General Manager of Surfers Paradise Rugby Club in 2018. Prior to that he was the General Manager of West Harbour Rugby Club (2017) and Parramatta Rugby Club in Sydney from 2009 to 2016. Michael is a Level 2 Coach and has also worked as Competition Manager for Sydney Junior Rugby Union as an employee of the NSW Waratahs as well as being an ARU Appointed Talent Scout from 2009 to 2015 where he identified players who have since made it to the highest level of Rugby.

Some of these players are current Wallabies: Scott Sio, Allan Alaalatoa, Adam Coleman and Reece Hodge and Alofa Alofa (Samoa), Evan Olmstead (Canada) and Ben Volavola (Fiji) were also identified and coached by Michael as talented youngsters who have also gone on to play international Rugby for other nations.

Club President Ken Jarvis says:

“There’s no question 2018 was a difficult year for The Alleygators. During the course of the season and immediately after the completion of the season the Club Management Committee conducted a number of internal reviews on not only our Rugby programme but also our off field processes as well. We are delighted to secure the services of Michael as Rugby Coordinator for 2019 and beyond as this is the first step to ensuring the positive growth of the club Rugby programme. Michael comes to us with an immense amount of experience in Coaching Rugby, identifying talented players and coaches but can also add value to the club through his extensive Rugby administration experience at NSW Waratahs and Sydney Premier Rugby Clubs and we are thrilled to be able to make such an outstanding appointment.’

Rugby Coordinator Michael Bell says:

“I’m delighted to be able to join the Alleygators and am really looking forward to getting stuck into the work. I have only been on the Gold Coast since March this year after joining Surfers Paradise Rugby however in my dealings with the Alleygators throughout the season I felt the club was the easiest to deal with. After chatting with some members of the Management Committee throughout the course of this season it was obvious to me that the club had a strong governance structure and a desire to get to the top of Gold Coast Rugby. So when the offer to join the club came through, it was just too good an offer to pass up. I have already met members of the Management, Senior and Junior Committees in recent days and am looking forward to meeting as many people as I can and formulating a plan with everyone to get the club to the top. We’re not getting ahead of ourselves. The hard work is being done but there’s a lot to do. My main goal is to provide the experience and platform for not only our players but our coaches as well to improve performance as we eagerly await the commencement of the 2019 season!”

1 Km Time Trial Shows Our Gators Are Determined!

The Southern Cross Rugby Academy off season program has kicked into our 2nd week, and it’s crazy to see the changes in movement and co-ordination already. Our base line testing is the dreaded 1km time trial, and we have seen some awesome results to date, with players now clocking PB’s after struggling on the 1st effort.

Some examples are young Gators U12’s players Callum Simpson going from a front rowers time of 6:32 down to an inside centres time of 4:38, Lochlan Smith from 5:51 down to a 5:19- not bad for a front rower, and Harry Felton’s 1st effort at a 6:32 and then improving on that this week by 67secs to a 5:25 time!!! Our best time by the Boys has been Ryan Wildman with an awesome 3:46- only beaten by 1 sec by his Dad and club legend- Chook.

Our Girls have had 1 attempt to date and our U15’s Cyclones player Zoe Hanna come in at 4:25 at her 1st training, and Jemma Bemrose from U17’s clocked 4:32, while Open’s Meg Holyman ran a 4:40 time after a 10km run the night before. Both groups have worked on the sleds, now loading slowly with weights and experiencing the repetition of heavy tyre flips mixed with body weight conditioning- think bear crawls and push ups plus more animal named “moves”. And to think all this work is only on the Monday nights. Great work guys!
