CLUB RUGBY NEWS
Gator Girls had their last Saturday round for the year on Saturday with heavy weather predicted but Coomera Crushers Rugby grounds were perfect. Our U15’s had some new opposition coming into our competition for the 1st time in Darling Downs, Far North Coast and the Tribe teams. These teams were of a very good standard, and our Girls played some great Rugby, unfortunately the results didn’t go our way for the U15’s, but the Girls certainly did well.
Our U17’s were boosted with a few players back from previous commitments and our team worked hard in all 4 games- 3 wins and a loss (although the loss was awarded in our favour due to that team playing non-eligible players).
This pushed us into the Final with Miami SHS, and the Girls fought hard against a Miami team that plays wide and avoids contact with very good catch and passing to stretch our defence. But we were able to make our tackles, then get the ball to our speedsters and score some great tries to come away with the Round 3 Trophy. Was great to see how far all our newer Girls to the game this year have come, and also those of other clubs, both on and off the field- plenty of smiles and laughing at everything, all the while the coaches were trying to get the Girls to be serious and focus hahaha. Our U15’s now prepare for the Noosa 7’s competition in October, and plenty of the Girls have stated they are hooked and will be playing next year. We have a great group of Girls and parents, and we are already planning for a bigger and better 2019. Well done Girls!!
Girl’s Come & Try Rugby
The final session for our new SCRA program- U11 Girls Come and try Rugby, is going to held at the Rugby Club on Saturday
morning. It has been a great time at each session, with the Girls progressing from the basics of catch/pass, kicking and evasion through to knee tackles, 2 handed touch games and even scrum set up against the scrum sled. This week’s session is a bit longer and we will focus on incorporating further Rugby techniques into bigger games. The future of the Gator Girls looks very good and the potential to turn these Girls into playing full games vs other clubs within the Gold Coast Girls competition is exciting.
Volunteer of the year
On behalf of Rugby Australia I want to thank you and all of your club volunteers for their tremendous work this year.
Volunteers are the backbone of community Rugby and the real heroes of our game.
We appreciate the endless hours they donate to their club and the passion they bring which inspires the next generation of players.
While each volunteer deserves recognition, there are always those who continuously go the extra mile. We all know them – they are the “champions” of our clubs – the people who are first to arrive to set up a game day or training session, the last to leave, the BBQ or canteen, and everything else in between.
To recognise your club champion, I encourage you and your members to nominate them for Rugby’s 2018 HSBC Volunteer of the Year Award.
This award considers anyone who has volunteered in Rugby, whether this has been at a club, school or sub union.
The winner’s club will be awarded with a $10,000 grant from HSBC to go towards developing and improving their club, as well as well as an invitation for a VIP experience at the 2018 Rugby Australia Awards on Friday 19 October in Sydney.
Nominations can be made via the Rugby Australia website with entries closing Sunday 23 September.
Your end of season function could also be a prime opportunity to recognise the volunteers in your club. We ask that you play the video referenced above as a tribute to the continuous hard work and effort of your club volunteers.
Thank you again for your dedication to Rugby this season and we look forward to receiving your nominations for the HSBC Volunteer of the Year.
Volunteer Of The Week
This week’s Volunteer of the week goes to Andrew Simpson. Andrew is the Manager of the U12 Gators side in which his son Callum plays. Keeping players, parents & coaches fully informed and on track from week to week like a good half-back marshalling his troops. Andrew has been the Manager of the team for several seasons and the U12’s have built into a very competitive side. This year fighting hard for a very high win rate all season. When asked how much of the team’s success was attributable to Andrew’s involvement, the Coaches gave a resounding “No Comment”… Andrew is well known for his accuracy when scoring games, according to his good self, with the coaches offering another ‘No Comment’ when asked to verify this.
Thank you for everything you do for the club Andrew, without people like you volunteering your time there is no Junior Rugby. If you’d like to lend a hand to help make our club a bit better, contact firstname.lastname@example.org
The Alleygators Rugby Club have engaged the services of Craig McLean as our new Sponsorship Manager.
Craig is a local bloke that many of you will already know from his years with BLK Sportswear. Craig will now be your contact person for sponsorship matters with the Alleygators.
Thanks again for your support and Go The Gators!
